At the beginning of the year, I had asked my FB to recommend me books to read for the new year that they thought I would like and I would read them. And this was one of them.
I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to like it from the description, but I had the day off today so I thought I’d just pull the bandage off and get it done.
It’s a book about abuse, specifically about a woman who abuses a bunch of men that she marries.
So she physically abuses them. Hits them, punches them, kicks one in the leg where he has pins, stabs one with a pencil, bites his ear and his thumb to the point of bleeding, steals their money, hires a hit kill, etc, etc. But the unforgivable abuse that she inflicts on them (which is mentioned numerous times. I lost count): she spits on them.
It’s a federal crime to spit on somebody, apparently, and it is just so upsetting to these men to the point when they are in front of the judge, this is the act of abuse that they bring up.
And that just set up the tone. The fact that there wasn’t any kind of examination about how this culture of “protecting women” patriarchy led to these men not being believed.
How one of the guys, who finds out she is stalking him and grooming a new boyfriend to kill him, is most upset because she committed adultery and confronts the guy about sleeping with his wife.
Or how the “me too” movement was blamed for men not being believed, even though the chapter it was mentioned in took place in 2008.
Or how the judge was evil judgey judge because he was married to an “illegal alien” (actual words used).

In short, this book was way too long (at least 50 pages longer than it needed to be) and was definitely not for me.
