3.72 AVERAGE

3.5 stars. Would've been higher, except Poirot doesn't appear until nearly the end. Also, the casual racism is a bit off-putting to this modern reader, even though it was likely quite usual in the time period in which it was written. Other than that, it's a quick, thrilling read.

Prince Ali Yusuf knows he must flee after the revolution took over his country; he asks his friend Bob Rawlison to hide his family jewels in a safe place until he arrives to a safe haven. Bob decides to hide them in her niece's lugagge, a luggage that will arrive ultimately at Meadowbank, one of the most prestigious girls schools in England. However, both Prince Ali and Bob are killed in a suspicious plane crash, and seemingly, no one knows where the jewels could be. As murder arrives at Meadowbank, the police is looking for a murderer that doesn't look like one.
Although I hate when a Poirot book doesn't have enough Poirot, I decided to give this a chance. The story isn't a bad one, but Poirot comes in at the last 20%, and if I'm being honest, I think Christie could've introduced another detective to solve the case. Also, there are some loose ends. I think this is one of the weakest Christie books I've read in a while.

Boarding schools and murder and hidden gems, oh my! But weirdly Poirot didn’t show up for like 180 pages.

So, lots of slightly absurd fun, but needed more Poirot.
adventurous mysterious slow-paced

This was an intriguing read with an interesting plot. It follows a slightly different format in that Poirot doesn’t join the case until quite far in, which sets it apart from other stories that Poirot features in. But I enjoyed it. He swoops in to shed some light and little grey cells on the matter and of course, the killer is found and unmasked.

Poirot to the rescue! Although unlike in some other stories, the police on this case were more than competent and did a fair bit (most of) the work and investigating but Poirot did help them on their way.

There was plenty in the story to keep you reading and entertained with the absence of Poirot, so don’t think that just because he doesn’t join until later on, that it will be boring up until he arrives. I certainly didn’t think that was the case.

It had the mystery, the murder, espionage, jewels and plenty to keep you guessing and on your toes. I liked that this story was set in a school and it was interesting to see this murder mystery play out until Poirots big reveal at the end.
