The book started dragging out unbearably slow and I felt like the plot was so far from the original story. What pushed me over was the immense graphic details of war, yes good writing way too much for me. No detail was left behind in describing death and dying. I read some reviews on the author and found that this book was a close retelling of a real like Japanese war and the author has her degree in this field and I was even more shocked. DNF.

This is one of the book series that has truly gotten me back into reading. Each time I picked it up it was difficult to put down.
It’s dark, with a complex main character and beautifully written. One of the tragic aspects of this book which I love is that even though there are moments where you know what the main character isn’t right, you as a reader cannot think of an alternative. It makes you question what you would do different, if there is anything you could do different.

One of the darkest books I've read. Kuang depicts war is it's most gruesome form.

This book put me in the interstices between emotions. It got me to experience the whole wheel of emotions. I love books that make me feel like I've lived a thousand other lifetimes.

From start to finish, the Poppy War is an engaging read. R.F Kuang does an excellent job in not only creating an interesting world with a lot of lore but also creating a compelling corruption arc for a woman who believes she’s wronged by the world. Really interested into seeing where the story goes in the second book.
