Borrowed this from a friend on vacation in Belize so my high rating of this book could be partially environmental. I didn't love all the stories but the ones I did like left me jealous of the way his brain works. I am also jealous of his time management skills - not only does he write, he runs his own neuroscience lab! I enjoyed the process of imagining (and also sometimes rejecting the validity of) the scenes he created, mostly because I had never thought about the afterlife in the ways he described. A nice little mental yoga read.

You most probably have some thoughts on Afterlife. Maybe you deny it fully, or expect some talk with god to clarify few questions that bothered you so much; maybe you imagine yourself in a garden full of angels, or maybe - you are convinced you will be reborn as a different person without any “in between” moments.

This book escalates these “what if’s” to completely new heights. You will experience afterlives full of political mess, love struggles, time and space games, research and development endeavors, sad gods, happy gods, no gods, too many gods - whatever your mind could only imagine or never imagine, all of that packed into 40 short stories.

Some of them moved me a lot, some were strange but thoughtful, some - quickly forgetful. Overall - easy and entertaining read, so if the topic of life after death is your cup of tea, give it a shot.

Bite-sized servings of big ideas. Best book of 2009, per Julia Keller.

This was a creative and enjoyable collection of what afterlife could look like. Some are funny, others sad, all poignant and reflective.

An enjoyable set of inventive "what if?" vignettes, Sum is Eagleman's envisionings of various versions of the afterlife. All are impressively unique, and some really stretch the mind. Be sure to open this book while fully alert. Eagleman's background as a neuroscientist is, at times, on full display in these pages as some of his ideas veer into the complex and obscure with talk of quarks and atoms. Readers not inclined toward the scientific may find these boring. Fortunately, the collection contains plenty of vignettes that will appeal more to the everyday reader, and those really make it a joy to read.
