i love to ponder!! points deducted for being annoying (eg stop assuming i’m a man and/or my whole life centres around finding a silly lady lover)

I really enjoyed hearing Jeffrey Tambor (the patriarch of the Bluth family from "Arrested Development") read parts of this on an episode of RadioLab, so I wanted to read the whole book. This book reminded me of Calvino's "Invisible Cities" - a series of evocative, imaginative vignettes that say more than what they say, if that makes sense. Eagleman's forty short stories about the afterlife are at turns funny, thought-provoking, and profound. I felt compelled at the end of every chapter to just sit and think. It's a short read, but one I'll be repeating.

there was no one plot line. Each chapter was its own story, and I really liked it because it allowed the author to explore a bunch of different stories about the afterlife, and it was really interesting and a very good read. would read again!
Forty—for the most part fascinating—ideas of the afterlife. Fascinating, yes: but they are also all, without exception, relentlessly depressing. I’m not saying I want angels with harps and fluffy clouds, but jeeze louise. These are all worse than the afterlife I generally believe in, i.e., nothing. I guess happiness, or even hopefulness, aren’t intellectually stimulating enough.

What a fascinating, cerebral read. Fun and thoughtful. I loved every short story. Each one had their unique way of making me think a bit afterwards.
