Pretty good book. As some other reviewers have mentioned, it's nice to see an older woman as a protagonist. I think the character voice is very strong in this book and really comes through in Brigid's narration. I have some personal critiques; the plot takes a while to really start up in my opinion (though that may just be due to the timeline I was reading it on), and there are some quite obvious errors that editing missed; a couple places where there was 'lay' where 'lie' should've been, protagonist taking gloves off multiple times in a scene, etc. There were also some decisions the main character made that seemed to come out of left field and that didn't entirely make sense to me as I read them. I really like the protagonist's relationship with her husband and her character overall. The twists are executed quite well, and were a big part of what won me over in the end. I might actually read the second book in this series if the library has a copy available.

The novel has great pacing and is packed with action right from page one. Brigid Quinn is such a badass female protagonist. Not only is she really tough, but she also doesn’t hide her flaws from the reader and is such an unapologetic character. She is also quite funny and fairly realistically portrayed in terms of personality which makes for a great contrast to the police procedural narrative presented throughout. Many twists and turns are included that will keep you guessing. The novel also contains details of Quinn’s marriage which I loved because of how realistic aspects of it were.

Although I love Brigid Quinn, some of the things that she does seem out of the ordinary for a 59-year-old woman even if she is a retired FBI agent. Sometimes it’s quite hard for me to picture the protagonist as that age because of how Masterman describes her. Hopefully, the character becomes more refined as the series progresses. The narrative does end quite neatly, as it does in many other crime fiction novels, and while it didn’t bother me massively, it’s definitely a detail to consider.
