Fun, exciting, and definitely tinged with dramatic flair I had a great time with this book. It was  enjoyable and exciting in the slightly pulpy way that got me just anxious enough to propel me onwards once things get running.

I’ve been a fan of the author’s video essays since I was a teenager and I think that lent some nostalgic voice to the narration for me and definitely earns me some bias I’ll have to admit to, but I enjoyed myself throughout. It’s very much like the kind of sci fi I enjoyed when I was younger but with a darker spice at moments.

I love and admire the author from her video essays. I’ve been looking forward to reading her books, and I really enjoyed this one. It has 2000s nostalgia but not too much, and a very unique and nuanced take on first contact and a truly alien species.

The author is creative and so smart, which shines in the way she put together the complex story and the plot twists.

I struggled at times with the writing on the line level. The audiobook may have helped or may have hindered here, I’m not sure. The actor did a good job making some cumbersome language feel emotional and tonal, but if I’d been reading with my eyes, maybe I could have sped through some of those phrases without letting them trip me up. I don’t know, this book is traditionally published so I’m sure I’m wrong, but it’s almost like it missed its copy edit.

Axiom's End seems to be a reasonable answer to the question "what would happen if extraterrestrials were here?" Main character Cora has realistic reactions to meeting aliens, and fears about what a government would do to her and her family.

Aliens are consistent, and well crafted. Story has many twists, turns, and mysteries. Alien tech is powerful, almost seeming like magic, and there are several visceral scenes when humans get in the way, or when aliens are fighting one another.

Overall 4.5, good book, but not one I will likely reread.
