Whelp, I don't know what that was, but I do know it wasn't for me.

I'm a fan of Andrea Long Chu's essays since I read her reviews on Hanya Yanagihara and Ottesa Moshfegh's novels, and I have been waiting to get my hands on Females for too long.

Needless to say, it didn't disappoint as an exploration of gender, sexuality, and everything in between.

this is such a big brain rot but chu’s points scratch a particular part of my deteriorating female brain.

i love andrea chu's writing voice and her outrageous claims but i feel very ambivalently about this gender theory pamphlet. she contradicts herself on many points about what gender is (whether existential or ontological) and she excludes/harms trans men in her views of femaleness. however she posits that gender is a submissive act (an absolute, sweeping claim imo) and that even desire, lack of consent and making room for another's ego is "female." this is the first piece of gender theory i've ever read and i feel that chu needs to give more space for gender possibility. she really just wrote about how everyone is a female trait lmao
