I really wanted to love this book more. But considering it took me a month to read this YA novel, I guess I didn't love it that much. I think I was taken aback by the fictional telling of such an integral part of the war that wasn't even close to what happened. The author comes clean about this in her "Author's Declaration of Accountability" at the end. After reading almost 100 pages I read her "Declaration" and found out her historical fiction novel is more fiction than history. It would make a good read for someone who doesn't read lots of World War II historical fiction; and it doesn't compare to Code Name Verity at all.

how are you going to write a whole book about the enigma machine and not mention alan turing once ??

Per usual, just brilliant work. I loved catching up with Jamie and Queenie again!

Grades 8 and up.

I don't have a real review for this and I'm not going to try, but these books are the best thing to come to YA lit since I don't know when. My library copy came through on Saturday (same day the US election was called; it was a good day), and I tore through it in two days (it would have been one, but a girl has to sleep sometime). We got Ellen and Jamie and Julie in this book, plus Louisa and Jane, and I think I can die happy now.

Nothing wrong with the story and I definitely liked Louisa and Jane, I just found it hard to suspend disbelief with all the unlikely coincidences especially with Queenie and Jamie both getting in the act. I had the same issue with Rose Under Fire, it just felt a little too "neat". Code Name Verity draws you in and keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. The others are good but not up to that bar.

Historical fiction written by my beloved Code Named Verity author.
