I don't think I learned anything after finishing this book. Normally, even with books I dislike, I learn something new or have some positive takeaway. The pictures were nice, but there really wasn't any new information. I expected to gain some additional knowledge about something, but that didn't happen. There was a graphic showing the split in the timeline that then compared the two. That helped visualize some of the differences, but I think most dedicated fans already understood those events.
Imagine the depth of the Star Trek universe and the time it encompasses. Now, distill that to 300 pages. Info is necessarily shallow. I don't recall any one topic receiving more than 4 pages. Four pages to depict Klingons. Four pages for Vulcans. Maybe two for Picard.
If you are more than a causal fan, you probably don't need to read this.

Ever since I was a little kid, I've always loved DK books. But this has got to be the biggest one I've ever read. Because of that, I was hoping for a little more.
I'm a huge Trekkie, which is why I wanted to read this. I know a lot about Star Trek, but I was hoping to learn more. The Star Trek Book doesn't go into much detail about things. It goes into just enough to remind someone like me about some of the episodes and movies I've watched, but rarely beyond that.
In that way, The Star Trek Book is tailored more for people with a passing interest or for fans of only one or two of the shows not for hardcore Trekkies as me. As disappointing as that may be, I understand it.
That's probably why the book spends entirely too much time talking about the Kelvin Timeline especially in the beginning. The third movie is good but if it was going to devote that much time to one alternate timeline, I feel like it should have also gone into more detail about all the Mirror Universes, not to mention what Worf experienced, when the Borg won and so on.
I still think the title of this book is very misleading. I wouldn't say it's THE Star Trek Book more as A Star Trek book.

I want to own this book! Alternate timelines explained and chronicled and the most comprehensive explanation of all things Star Trek! LOVED IT!!
An overview of Star Trek that didn’t teach me anything new, but was still enjoyable to read. That said, I imagine I only think it’s enjoyable because I’m already a huge fan of the franchise.
The book had great detailed information about the entire Star Trek universe using information from all the shows and movies. I felt it was a great refresher since it's been a while since I've watched the older shows. It's also great how it helps put everything from the various shows together in one timeline (even including the alternate timelines xD )
A great little resource. The book gives an overview of the characters, ships, technology, alien races, and history that have made Star Trek one of the most famous and lauded science fiction series of all time.
