While the plot itself is thin, this book has undoubtedly set the stage for every disaster film made since its time. It is both frightening and intricately detailed, and the ending is perfect. A clear masterpiece of science fiction.

Watched the Tom Cruise movie and liked the concept...figured I’d read the book it was based upon. I like that the book focused less on defeating the aliens in a climatic final battle and rather the struggle of a few individuals, particularly the I suppose mental breakdown of one of the protagonist’s companions during such an ordeal as an alien invasion. The vocabulary felt a bit outdated which isn’t surprising considering when it was written but it was also refreshing.

Was it groundbreaking, revolutionary, and visionary on the part of H.G. Wells? 100%. But at this point, I’ve read so much better stuff in the genre that the progenitor pales in comparison to its descendants.
