Main character was annoying, and the focus on a male character discovering her period blood first, touching the blood, and even describing the color was incredibly odd to me. The nature of that writing was that it felt like there was a lot of action with no progress. Seske and her friend are walking. Guard gets attacked by a bug. Seske saves him, then he owes her, then he stops owing her, then she tries to claim him in a weird political move, then that doesn't work and she looks dumb. Just very sudden all around.
Finally, I found Seske herself annoying. I knew this book wasn't for me when her sister was revealed and I knew I was supposed to feel bad for Seske essentially losing her birthright, but I couldn't because I really did feel like the sister was fit for the throne/matriarch role.
It's a shame because I really like the concept presented, and many bits of the world building were quite interesting. They're a matriarchal society, so yeah you do get one or two Men's Rights-esque moments, but they're not awful (annoying, but not awful). It's rare to find a book with a matriarchal structure that doesn't automatically mirror patriarchy one for one. Wish this could have been more enjoyable.
