This has been on my tbr for over a year. I think the first like 3rd of it i was interested specifically in the world building. But the further i got the more i found the main character to be insufferable with no redeeming qualities. Theres an situation early on where she assaults a man which is never addressed. And then honestly the ending with her getting pregnant by the alien her ppl literally live in against its will/ and the person she assualted earlier is to much. This book also had alot of sexual violence. Which is the reason i dnf’d prey of gods by this author. Wont be picking anymore books by them at this point.

I’m not sure if it’s because the ebook format I was reading lacked most breaks, but the pacing of this book felt all over the place. I absolutely loved the worldbuilding, it was so vibrant and unique in so many aspects, but it was hard to connect to because there wasn’t much to anchor me in the world when I couldn’t tell how time was progressing. Again, that may be on the format I was reading.
On the other hand, the characterization also felt like it was going wildly back and forth, especially with Doka. I got the impression that there were so many themes and story beats packed into this book—good themes, but just so many—that characterization was difficult. Tackling generational trauma, familial abuse, growing up too fast, power systems, political insurrection, feminism, classism, environmentalism—just to name a few—all in the span of 336 pages is a lot to tackle. I can’t really say how I feel about how all those themes were done because of that. I liked this book at the end of the day, certainly, but honestly I think I might have liked it better as a longer series where the individual themes and characters had more room to breathe and be fully fleshed out.

The plot of idealistic leaders that live in space whales was good... But I didnt need the tentacles or the mysterious alien pregnancy 😅
3.5 rounded up. it reminded me of both kameron hurley’s stars are legion and rivers solomon’s unkindness of ghosts, two books i adore. fundamentally, this is its own thing, and i really enjoyed it (especially the worldbuilding and heart bits). ending was a shitshow though, and i fucking hate the surprise pregnancy trope, so that put a damper on my enjoyment.
I do not care even a little bit about Doka, so i will not be reading the sequel, but i will absolutely be reading more nicky drayden in the future!

Escaping Exodus was a great book. It reads YA, but has violence so definitely adult. Not too gorey though, although I would expect more blood living in an animal. The unique living environment drew me in immediately and the imagery is fun. It can be a lot to absorb, but still interesting. The love story is kinda secondary, and the sexual fluid society was also a unique touch. Book has a lot of serious themes of oppression, racism, disregard for life, honoring ancestors, and how to make amends for atrocities inflicted upon people. I enjoyed this story, but not sure I will pick up book 2. I am happy with this story as is. No cliff hangers, but story is not over.
