This book says its a sci-fi/fantasy, but it's horror. A very dark horror. It's probably one of the most disturbing things I've read in a long time. I honestly can't put together a coherent sentence to describe how I feel about this book. Read at your own risk!

Pros:
-Characters (Adalla, Doka, Sisterkin)
-Matriarchy (specifically that it wasn't perfect)
-Writing
-Concept
-Seske's arc (it feels like we got to see a villain origin story)

Cons:
-Sisterkin was done wrong
-Pacing was off in the ending
-Wheytt's fate

I really enjoyed this story. I loved the vibrant descriptions and the way that fantasy and sci-fi blended in this story. I also really loved our two main characters and the way they grow and change throughout the novel. Seske and Adalla I love them so so much. I am excited to see how the next book continues!

Felt a little rushed but I loved the storyline and the world

An interesting space drama/adventure set on board a beast that's been harnessed as a space ship (yes, something we've seen in Octavia Butler and Nnedi Okorafor; I'm curious where else). It also has some interesting portrayals/explorations of gender roles.

Excellent world building. Very alien.

I loved the ending. The world building was difficult to understand at first but then I fell into it.

...what a strange little book. And yet, enjoyably strange? I read most of this today bc it was so bizarre I needed to see how it all ended.

The matriarchal structure of the society and the complex family units were interesting if a bit confusing. I wish this had been longer because I feel like there's so much more to explore within what happened, and I wanted more. Not necessarily more from a sequel, but I just wanted to spend more time learning about this world?! Although I wouldn't mind a sequel.

This is the type of book I think a lot of readers will either love or hate...which is weird I'm kind of in the middle. I think you need to go into this story with the mindset of a Neil gaiman book - not everything will make sense right away (maybe not ever) but just go with it bc it'll be a weird little ride. There are some truly
