Totally took me by surprise. An excellent YA scifi. It's fast paced and the end goes at a break neck speed.
The stakes are high. The ending works for a standalone or first in a series.
The world building was unique and fascinating.
I had a blast

I love the concept of this book. I love how afro-centric it is and how relevant its critique is of our capitalistic consumption of our planet. I love that it's queer in so many ways. The pacing was not quite right: a bit slow for the first half and then a bit too fast for the second half. The first half had such detailed world-building and scene development (almost to the point of tedium at times), but the second half felt rushed with unbelievable outcomes, unbelievable due to lack of development. It's definitely worth a read, though.
Interesting concept and social system, unfortunately the plot didn’t catch me as much as I’d hoped. Still a good book with themes of family, obligation, love, and survival.
I absolutely ADORED this book all the way up to the ending, where it felt like it just fell apart. I'm so confused with how it all played out - plotlines suddenly came and went or disappeared without any resolution, it felt so bizarre, out of character, and rushed.
Let me state that I fucking LOVED the world-building, it's genuinely one of the most unique and interesting worlds I've ever had the pleasure of reading. I adored every consideration towards how a society like this would be shaped by their surroundings, and the workforce was just so fascinating and I could probably spend another 200 pages reading about the Heart and Boneworkers. UGH it was so cool, I adored it. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the reverse-misogyny aspect of their culture, mostly because I despise those kinds of stories. I just don't find the fictional plight of men interesting. Same goes for reserve-racism stories, but this thankfully wasn't that.
I also loved the relationships, I thought the characters were well-written and interesting, and their dynamics with each other were just as intriguing..... until the end. I simply do not get what happened with the sister.
Overall, I had a lot of fun, but the ending didn't have time to breathe and seemed bizarre.

I quite enjoyed this story, although some of the fantasy details got hard to follow. I enjoyed it, though, and look forward to reading the next one.
I... am not sure how I feel about this book.
I feel bad giving it three stars because I think a lot of the problem is just that it was not at all what I was expecting, but also there are times where the writing and pacing feels off and I got confused. Also I don't know that I'll ever recover from hearing the phrase "tentacle cooch" in the audiobook

A terrifically imaginative SF/F novel full of powerful and provocative images and powerful symbolism. The pacing is a little inconsistent – some parts feel rushed – but it's a wonderful novel by an exciting author.
