I was prepared to give this book 5 stars, it touched me so deeply, and resonated in so many ways. As I was reading I kept telling my partner 'it could've been my journal I'm reading!' On every page it's a -reflection of me, my experience with C-PTSD and therapy, being triggered, negative thought spirals, etc. It just feels really special and important to me that I am able to see myself like this in someone else, especially knowing this person found a path of recovery; it's very hopeful. It was a really painful book at many points and made me tear up and cry at times. I loved it and would recommend it thourougly! That being said, I'm upset and dissappointed by the binary perspective in this book. I understand that the author is a cis woman and can only do so much to try and incorporate diverse perspectives/understanding of the world but it was a let down to read sooooo many studies about 'women versus men' in the medical and psychological field. It just falls short and is such a let down, it lacks nuance for intersectionality and as a trans person I know alot of this to be deeply flawed and at times completely incorrect information. Towards the end of the book I felt a little disconnected from it, trying to race through it to finish it instead of taking every sentence in, because it just felt too repetitive and vague in it's messaging.

Gut wrenching, clever, informative and beautiful. This memoir is intentional and healing. Although it touches on abuse and trauma, the other delivers stories and information with care for the reader. Her style is sarcastic yet still endearing. The book has a happy and hopeful ending and that disclaimer kept me reading when things were rough. Most of all I appreciated the communal and systemic lens Foo brought to her analysis on mental health and trauma.

Transformative book,  for both the author,  and any reader open to what she is telling us. Highly likely to be triggering to anyone with cptsd. I had to set it down and take a break multiple  times. But I also learned so much,  about myself and about others.  the audio version is well-done too. Foo works in radio and podcasts, and you can tell.  Hugest recommendation! just please check content warnings first.

Not sure what to add as a trigger warning because there a so many. I loved the short chapters and the way she pulls the audio recordings in at the end.
