I didn’t quite know Lou Sanders before reading this. Her style is very addictive though, and I was genuinely looking forward to getting back into listening to the audiobook. She discusses a lot of heavy topics like alcoholism and sexual assault, but it never feels like a difficult read somehow. That’s very well done.
I wasn’t really sure what the focus of the book was, though. It has a central message about overcoming shame, but it’s not really explained how you’d do this (beyond explaining that we should all talk about shame more). Sanders went from struggling with alcoholism to becoming a famous comedian, which is a journey I’d love to have read about more. Instead, it seems to just… happen, out of the blue. Maybe that’s how it felt to her, but as a reader I felt I should be taking lessons from that particular part yet nothing was presented to me. What we did get is chapters on spirituality and feminism, and a lot of descriptions about her sex life. It was presented well enough so I wasn’t bored, but I wasn’t always sure what some of these segments added.
I would highly recommend the audiobook if you’re picking this up, as it adds so much to the text - things like footnotes and chuckles, but also a recording of a chat she had with a friend at the end of the book.
