Wow. I just finished it, and I have so many thoughts, some of them to be only shared with a journal or therapist. This book was absolutely amazing. It was heartfelt, emotional and from beginning to end pulled at your heartstrings. Although my grandmother became a widow when I was a child, my mom became a widow about 7 years ago, and witnessing that with my own eyes and reading what Yesica and Ana experienced felt like at times, someone had peaked into our lives. One thing that remains the constant anywhere is how being the oldest daughter is not for the faint at heart. I especially enjoyed and appreciated how all of thr questions in my head while reading were all answered by the end. This was absolutely one of the best books I've read this year.

3 generations of women in different stages of grief temporarily forced under one roof. Of course relationships are tested, te skins rise and secrets are kept and revealed.
When We Were Widows is about mothers and daughters, one of my favorite topics in fiction. As daughters, what do we know about who our mothers are outside of being mothers? What secrets do mothers keep from us? How well do mothers know their daughters?
I’ve read Chavez Macias’ 2 previous books and she’s so good at writing complex and layered relationships between women.
This was a great read, thank you to @hearourvoicestours for the e-ARC!

The title focuses on widows but I would say this book is really about women learning to thrive as individuals-- full human beings capable of loving, hurting, and growing because of and despite of their relationship with men. This book is about unlearning the lessons about who you are supposed to be and how you are supposed to be so that you can pursue your interests and desires. This book is about connecting across generations of women who have each, in their own way, carved their own path. It is about generations of women evolving in their relationships past what we have conditioned to believe are the roles of the grandmother, mother, and daughter. It captures so beautifully what it is like to understand that your mother and your grandmother are women, flesh and bone just like you. This book is about healing.
This book is also about loss, yes the loss of spouses but also of homes, community, and dreams. This story is about women remembering that they are bound to one another, not by blood or loss, but by the dreams they choose to make real because it is never too late to become who you are meant to be. This is a story of failing and being brave enough to try again.
Author Annette Chavez Macias' engaging storytelling results in a story with momentum and constant discovery. These discoveries are touching and at times, heart wrenching. Grab your tissues because this book gets four hankies and the tear jerker scale!

This is a heartbreaking yet beautiful story of three generations of strong Latinas who find themself back under one roof having to face the secrets they have been keeping from each other.
This is a book filled with complex family dynamics, emotions, fears, loss and grief but written in the most beautiful and powerful way and so full of love.
A very emotional book and I cried a few times reading it and felt so connected to the characters.
I look forward to reading more books by this author because this was such an incredible story and I highly recommend that you check it out!
