This books is what the standard should be. This is not just tropes and romance and magic it is art. This is using language and bending it to your will to tell a beautiful story of love and heartbreak, reflecting the lessons we learn through life.

TLDR: a romantic (and maybe predictable) dark academia fantasy for people who binge watched “Locke and Key” or “The Magicians” during the covid lockdown. I wasn’t blown away but I enjoyed it and look forward to the 2nd half of the story.
The tropes and plot devices are basicAF, so just embrace it and prioritize enjoying the rest. The woe-is-me FMC, the broody boy-next-door-childhood-friend, and the bad-boy-who-goes-soft-for-her love triangle. The magic college with four main factions, and a fifth group of outsiders. The generational trauma of continuing the parents story. That being said, in return for putting up with that- we get lots of cult rituals, blood magic, demons in other planes, and decent cliffhangers to follow up on.

After finishing this whole book I still have no idea what I read.
Harder to read than normal and took a while to get into but amazing once I got a run with it. Such a different concept to what I normally read. Very refreshing. Somewhat predictable in some areas and others are complete twists I couldn't see coming. Overall, I really enjoyed it.
