Well written, but WHAT just happened there?? It reads like the origin story for a buddy thief film.

What did I read? 😆

For such a short story, Flynn still managed to catch me up in the "Who's the bad guy? Her? Him?" that she got me in with Gone Girl, only with more ghost stories and creepy children. A bit disappointed by the ending, though.

Like most of Gillian Flynn's output, the plot is dark and the characters are all pretty fucked-up but in an intriguing way. There are a few nice twists even within the limited space afforded by a short story, and she doesn't drop the ball at the end. Nice.

half stars for half a book. GIRL YOU SHOULD HAVE TURNED this into a whole BOOK

i was a little apprehensive reading this for two reasons. one, because "dark places" was kind of a let-down for me. two, because this is a short story. cramming an entire, plausible plot into 60-something pages is difficult enough. but when you had a thriller/horror component to it, it can be disastrous--or worse, laughable.

well, i can gladly say that i enjoyed it. it was creepy, scary, and distressing at the same time. flynn didn't waste time with side plots and long monologues. she jumped right into the story. everything--and i mean EVERYTHING--had a reason. there were many twists and turns that took me completely off guard. the ending was a little too open-ended for me, but it makes sense. the main character never claimed to be a good person, so it checks out.

this is one of the best short stories i've read this year. it creeped me out, made me laugh, made me cover my mouth with shock. i rarely say this about short stories, but honestly i wish the flynn made this one longer. i would've LOVED that so much.

this is the perfect book if you need a quick book to get you out of a slump, or you're curious about short stories.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: narrator's voice was okay. i hated the voice she did for Miles and the main character. it annoyed me, but other than that, she did a good job translating the tone of the book in the right places.
