Finally broke my mediocre/blech book streak! This was a great story with interesting characters and development. I enjoyed the heck out of the book, my only complaint being that a few parts seemed to drag a little. Overall though, it was a really good book that seems to be a great start to a series. I will definitely be continuing with DI Callanach's stories

I have read Perfect remains by Helen Fields. This is the first book in the D.I. Callanach series. I read a copy from the library whilst listening to the audiobook. Read this because this series has been on my tbr for a while and I really wanted to read a thriller. Hope I can fit it in for Magical Readathon somewhere, but we shall see. This is an adult crime thriller.
This was great. I have found out that these are the thrillers I actually enjoy. Basically detectives (or someone else like a journalist) figuring out who did it. I also like that we have the perspective of the killer as well. In this one I really liked all the characters, which is great because I can continue the series. The plot was very well done as well.

Structurally, this is an excellent police procedural, and the main detective is a great character. The pacing was really spot on and the reveal built to a satisfying climax. My only issue was the injection of the author's politics (which is completely subjective and YMMV). A hyper-misogynistic serial killer! The Catholic Church is evil! How long until these tropes are tired cliches? It was a little grating, but others may not care.
