Finally completed this. It was good. I enjoyed the stories and the history. But sometimes I got lost in the history. Maybe because I am. It nearly as knowledgable about WW1 as I am about WW2.

Great, but still not as good as Pillars. I cannot wait to read the next one, but I figure I should wait towards the end of the year so it will not be such a long wait for the third one. Highly recommend this one!

My favorite historical fiction, this book (and the rest of the trilogy) gave me some perspective into the minds of 20th century europeans, I learned a lot without even realizing it

I feel guilty giving this only one star since I was actually dumb enough to read all 1000 pages and simply not quit earlier. I'm sure this is a great book on many levels, but I went in expecting another Pillars of the Earth and was disappointed by the combination of the lack of character development and the painful level of detail about every level of politics of the WWI.
