To be clear, I read excerpts in school and have not yet taken up the weighty task of competing this absolute unit of a book. I don't know if I ever will, but the stories were definitely interesting.

Ulysses is a monument in literature, one of the few books I can safely say that at some point later in my life I will give myself the pleasure of re-reading. I have a hard time trying to really paint an understanding of the thematic opulence, and relentlessly challenging passages of varying prose present to consistently throughout.
An attentive reader will be well rewarded. The novel is densely filled with motifs, where across every chapter a careful weaving together of imagery takes place, consisting of colours, the human body, art, symbols, literary devices, distant allusions to Greek Heroes and Shakespeare's Hamlet. None of this overshadows the narrative in any way. Bloom's story and life is his own and not made to feel like a cheap fabrication.

yes i started reading this book three years ago and couldnt really understand where it was going i tried to pick it up again a year later and it wasnt until a few months ago that i decided to work harder at it then thinking about rating this for goodreads i was at 2 stars a few years ago then three then 4 as recently as two weeks ago but then something about those last two chapters and its 5 stars yes theres something about those chapters where those stars start aligning and yes theres something philosophical beautiful and eternally sad and the cadence of Mollys final chapter serves as such a beautiful contrast to the inquiry of the previous chapter affirmative yes its affirmative

Why is this book
I have now watched...*several* videos online attempting to explain this book to me. I get it. It's quite something. It just so happens that the "something" it is goes PHEWW right over my head, I guess. I do not understand. I wanted to. I tried. I really tried. I don't.
Goodbye, Ulysses. I will not miss you.

There's a lot I can appreciate about Ulysses. Lord knows I love an Everyman story, and I believe the the ordinary is Epic. I enjoy the parallels with the Odyssey-- potato as amulet etc.. I respect Ulysses' position in the pantheon of literature. I can groove with the music and lyric of the writing, and see the value in Joyce's stream of consciousness. It was an uphill slog for me, but I'm glad it was around for Samuel Beckett and Jack Kerouac to enjoy.
