Such a great short story! I listened to it read by "The Page Turner" on YouTube and he did a fantastic job!!! I am a Walter Mitty...a constant daydreamer living a thousand lives at once...and I don't regret it!
You can see this mentioned in my January 2021 reading wrap up video:

I was first introduced to this story by the old Danny Kaye movie. It was wonderful reading this and seeing that his movie used a lot of the same day dreams and the ta-pocketa-pocketa-pocketa. I only wish it was longer.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty tells the story of Walter, who is a daydreamer. He daydreams about fantastical situations where he is always the hero. His daydreams are interrupted by his wife, who seems to think he can't do anything right.

This was a short audiobook (less than 15 mins) and we get just a small glance at Walter's life. His daydreams are interesting and the time we witness his life with his wife, you feel a little sad for him as she seems to think he is so incompetent. Despite being short I liked this story and I think it will make a powerful story, when it's released on film.

Ben Stiller is a good narrator and I'm interested to see how good he will perform this story on the big screen.

I listened to the free short story narrated by Ben Stiller and it was quite good, but not near long enough to get a proper sense of Walter Mitty's life other than he doesn't seem to be a very happy man. I wanted to see the film before listening to this and now I'm even more keen.

A sublime short story. On a day I read two (see also: The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, by Mark Twain) both of which were fantastic - this piece of escapist fantasy (quite literally an account of a man who invokes fantastical mind wanderings to get away from the mundanity of his own life) is a joy.

Creating ridiculous - but authentic sounding - language to detail five flights of fancy on a day of buying household supplies and driving his wife to appointments, it is easy to empathise with the downtrodden hero. Walter Mitty is undefeated. Read this.
funny lighthearted fast-paced

I'm a sucker for short stories especially ones as beautiful as this one! But in rare cases I do prefer movies to books and this is one of those instances. The movie blew me away and inspired me. It will stay in my heart for a very long time. It baffles me that the movie didn't receive any awards. However, this isn't a review about a movie it's a review of the book- well short story that is.
The contrast of his monotonous life and his daydreams written in this point of view made it a wonderful read. I love how significant the title is too because to Walter, the fantasies are all his own and he doesn't have anyone to dictate or alter them. The only piece of his fantasies that he let's slip is the smile that escapes toward the end when he faces the "firing squad". A fantastic ending to a great short story.
...but I would still pick the movie every time! Very rare case! ;)

I got this book for free from Amazon (thanks guys!). I really enjoyed this book and the afterword by Ben Stiller was nice too. At first I didn't get the turns in the book, but it all of a sudden made sense and I was saddened. It made me wonder too how many people live "secret lives" like Walter Mitty.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty really sums up what reading is for me. Escaping into a book to escape the often dull, boring, real world, is what I do every time I read. I feel for Walter, and really wish he had a happier real life. Ben Stiller was an amazing narrator. I really liked how you could tell between the "real life" and not so real life easily with just his voice. His real life voice was bored, lonely, and tired and his fantasy voice was excited and full of energy.
