Bullet Review:
This is one of the classic Batman stories from the 1980's, penned by none other than Alan Moore, master of the Dark Arts. Pretty much ANY modern Batman (and even Batgirl ones!) story references the events in this one. I don't know if they ever tried to reboot this, but I could see that being a miserable failure.
The art was gorgeous, the story dark - oh god, is this DARK. Definitely not for the young and faint at heart. It was incredibly weird to get a Joker backstory, but I like Bolland believe that it was just one of many.
As for the "ambiguous ending", I assumed Am I missing something? I didn't think it was that ambiguous until I read Bolland's afterward.

Joker got arrested. Or Batman went back on his promise and actually took off with the Joker.yaakovakiva's review against another edition

What a great story, and backed up by FABULOUS artwork. If you haven't read this deluxe edition with coloring re-done by the original artist, I really think you might be missing out on one of the coolest things about this book, not to mention you get a bonus extra story at the end by Bolland (The Innocent Guy) which is pretty cool.
This was great... fantastic follow to just finishing [b:Watchmen|472331|Watchmen|Alan Moore|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1175041710s/472331.jpg|4358649], and I'm really growing to love Alan Moore's twisted inner world and how great he is at turning even an existing concept into something even better. Great book, and what an ending!

How is this so good? Does not overstay its welcome. Manages to be an origin story AND an ending story. It's sad, scary and lays out a story without judgement. It finishes with the best collection of panels I've ever read.

Wasn’t terribly impressed by this, to be honest. The Joker’s backstory seemed flimsy and clichéd, and there’s frankly just not that much else to this (aside from the horrible stuff that happens to Barbara—let’s not even get into that). I liked the art, and I liked the ending. But otherwise—meh.
