It all came together in the end, but it took quite the journey to get there. Muir's writing always propels the story forward, but there are some questions left open that I think made the story harder to follow. That said, the world she has bult is incredible and it is a treat to spend time in it.

Absolutely love the first 400 pages of this, plus specific parts of the ending (ie whenever God is on the page). My problems with the ending are much the same as my problems with the ending of Gideon the Ninth - namely, that the fighting is too long, the exposition is too rushed, and Gideon is out of character. Where did Gideon as a stoic, chivalrous lover of Harrow come from? Where did the traumatised vengeful jock go? I miss my girl.

The things I loved about it were also the same things I loved about Gideon the Ninth. The world and its characters, for the most part, feel real and compelling. I know most people find this book especially confusing, but I don't quite understand why. Probably that's just because my neurodivergence functions a lot like Harrow's, and the things that make perfect sense to her and to me are strange to outsiders. Funny thing to internalise, and I'm glad to have found that representation. Also, the prose was as strong as ever. I'd expected much more of a style change, given how everyone talks about this book being difficult to read, and was glad to see that wasn't the case.
