The entire part with Harrow and Ortis was so unnecessary but the ending was so goddamn brilliant.

Great idea but the author's writing seems more indulgent and forced. Unfortunately the pace was also too slow for me and that made the mystery drag on too long so that I lost my investment. The payoff was unsatisfying because the set up was not "specific " enough. It seemed as though the author feared her readers picking up on the conclusion which just cheapened it.
I enjoyed her characterisation though.

I really struggled for like the first 3/4 of this book, there were things with the narration and timeline that were making it very difficult for me to stay interested or invested in the story. Around the 3/4 mark is when things suddenly started making sense, but I do have to rate this based on how I felt for most of my reading experience. I'm sure that the score will go up the next time I read it since I will actually know what's going on!

i loved the first 4 parts of this book. it as very well constructed, but not so confusing that you couldn't arrive at the book's conclusions yourself.

part 5 however.... i care so little for gideon nav. if she has no haters, i am dead.

I am profoundly conflicted!! the first 70% of this book was a solid 1/5, I almost gave up repeatedly. but then it shot up to a solid 5/5 for the final 100 pages?? so it gets no stars from me, just a begrudging nod to tamsyn muir for writing one of the most compelling final acts in the middle of a series I’ve read recently.
