The more the plot splits from the cliches and stereotypical tropes- the better the writing becomes. While there’s still definitely similarities to other books within the same genre (cough cough, Red Queen), I’m finding I’m enjoying the story more as we get to know the characters better.
I’ll admit, I didn’t see that ending coming and I’m real worried about what it means for our cast in the next installment. This book did get a little redundant with the forced proximity between the characters and the amount of “will they, won’t they,” moments throughout. And though I hate to admit it, I am having fun reading this series (even though I fully recognize this isn’t groundbreaking writing- I think there’s a difference between good writing and enjoyable writing)🏹🏜️

This is a note to self to not follow through with books just because they were “available now” and “audiobook” and this especially if the first book was bad. Somehow absolutely nothing happened and the only thing that did was cringey banter that honestly I wouldn’t call banter idk. AIA to anyone that liked this,
But I think the cringey part was like, was it george Orwell?, who said don’t use a cliche? And there were so many

So, I‘m too lazy to construct a real review, so here are just a few points:
- Why is this a fantasy novel? There is no use of powers anywhere!
- The characters from the last novel had nothing to do. Andy, Lenny and Jax had brief MCU-esque cameos and Kitt had had a few depressing chapters, but nothing else
- How can a book be so fast-paced, yet nothing happens? Seriously, they spend like half the book in the desert.
- The relationship between Paedyn and Kai was nice, I guess, but they always went back and forth, which got annoying
- the ending was good, and the only part I genuinely enjoyed, but couldn’t this just have been act 1 of the book? Cut out all the unnecessary stuff from the rest of the book, easy. This could have been a great duology, but publishers are obsessed with making trilogies, for some reason
I‘m still going to check out the next novel, because the ending genuinely intrigued me
