A good book, though not as well written as many of the other Star Wars books in this series, which seems weird to me since the author is a forgotten realms author. I'm not sure why this is, maybe because she is not used to the science fiction aspects or the star wars universe in general. The story is good, and Ta'a Chume is horrid as usual. And technology comes into play that could certainly prove quite valuable in the war.

It was a disappointing follow-up to Star by Star for me. Almost more of a breather. There's enough intrigue to keep me interested in the New Jedi Order series but overall I wasn't that interested in this story.

The New Jedi Order series can be an inconsistent one. Often a strong book in will be followed a weak one, and just as often an extremely eventful book will be followed by one in which practically nothing happens. That is certainly the case here. Star By Star was a well done and hugely significant entry in the series, which so much plot advancement and so many key moments in the overall story that my biggest qualm with it was that it probably could have (and should have) been two books. Dark Journey is very much the opposite of that. Nothing of much consequence happens, and instead the book attempts to take an introspective look at Jaina's character and her increasingly dangerous flirtations with the Dark Side following a personal tragedy. That certainly has a lot of potential, but I found it poorly executed, and her relationships with Jagged Fel and Kyp Durron, which I imagine is supposed to feel like some sort of love triangle, did absolutely nothing for me. A bunch of uninteresting political intrigue at Hapes is thrown in for good measure. (Oh, and a previously interesting character from better books in the past is reduced to very little and unceremoniously killed off too, which is rather grating.) Easily my least favorite book of the New Jedi Order series so far.
