Well, this is where the Dragonlance novels began. I wish that I had read this 30-40 years ago. It would have seemed fresher, I am sure. Nothing inherently wrong with this, it is perfectly acceptable. My plan is to burn through as many of the Dragonlance novels, as well as other Dungeons & Dragons novels, and rate them based on the present, not the past.

Sadly, this just wasn't my cup of tea.

The writing felt stilted to me, the characters flat, and in general it was a bit old fashioned and sexist. My eyes could have rolled out of my head every time I was presented with a new female character.

I can see how this would have made an excellent DnD campaign but the story telling wasn't strong enough to translate it to a novel. It felt bitty.

This was my gateway drug to reading as a kid. I probably have Weis/Hickman to thank for both my love of reading and my career in the book industry.

I reread this every few years and I will admit it doesn't age great (it is cliche ridden and feels fairly basic if you read it later in life) but if you are a fantasy fan this is a series worth checking out.

I've always heard enthusiastic stories about Dragonlance as a setting with a lot of lore and potential for storytelling. The world really does seem like a lot of fun to run a D&D-game in and that's basically what this book was. A fun adventure, with characters that as of now aren't really that deep yet. I got the impression that all of them were pretty flat.
