Number 13 of the Inspector Gamache series did not disappoint. As always, Penny does a great job of weaving historical facts together with her fictional tales. The main characters are still the main draw for me. Over time they have become like real people to me.

It took me.longer than usual to get through this one. This is not a reflection on the book, but rather on how busy life is. Mysteries are best consumed in short order, so I felt a little disconnected from this tale.

During the first third of the audiobook, I was not completely engaged, switching between the trial and the past made it difficult for me to remain focused, and I didn't care much for the new characters. Of course, as the plot built up, I was back to enjoying the mystery as usual. By the end of the book, I almost shed a tear, but it was the author's note that made me cry.

First finished book of the year, and it’s a 5⭐️! That’s gotta be a good sign, right? I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again—I don’t know how Louise Penny does it, but she has done it again!

This one is SUPER intense! The Chief Inspector Ganache books are always a slow build for me, but once I reached the final 100-150 pages, I could not put this one down. Louis Penny is a master at building suspense and writing a cliffhanger. The storyline focuses on the drug trade and its impact on all other crime. I really liked how Louis Penny chose to have the Chief Inspector view this systemic, societal problem through the lens of its impact on future generations, specifically the lives of our children and grandchildren.

I really enjoyed the constant debate and discussion of conscience/morality vs. laws/rules. It made me reflect on how we really KNOW when we are doing the “right” thing (or if we ever really know…🙃). I also liked the exploration of the idea that sometimes inaction is actually an important and purposeful form of action.
•
If you have not yet started this series, you NEED to! Coming from someone who purposely avoids series, that’s saying something! (Still Life is the first book in the series, in case you were wondering 😉). I can absolutely guarantee you, I’ll be back in Three Pines very, very soon!
