The plot was interesting but the writing style was intentionally vague. The author would reference that the characters knew something but didn’t specify what that knowledge was to keep driving the narrative. It may be loved by some, but not by me.

Number 13 of the Inspector Gamache series did not disappoint. As always, Penny does a great job of weaving historical facts together with her fictional tales. The main characters are still the main draw for me. Over time they have become like real people to me.

It took me.longer than usual to get through this one. This is not a reflection on the book, but rather on how busy life is. Mysteries are best consumed in short order, so I felt a little disconnected from this tale.

During the first third of the audiobook, I was not completely engaged, switching between the trial and the past made it difficult for me to remain focused, and I didn't care much for the new characters. Of course, as the plot built up, I was back to enjoying the mystery as usual. By the end of the book, I almost shed a tear, but it was the author's note that made me cry.

The tension in this one is incredible. It's told to and fro in time, with a court case in the height of summer flashing back to events in a freezing and wet November. The story centres on a murder, but there is so much more at stake, both personally and professionally for Gamache, his family and the whole of Three Pines.
One of my favourites in the series so far (though I love them all).
