Enjoyable, quick read. I had no issue following the stories from the 3 characters. I didn’t appreciate that magic potions were glorified, nor the making and disguising of poisons.

However, in the end the apothecary has a change of heart and stops making and dispensing poisons.

I did find several sentences and paragraphs to record and reflect on.

Every time I read historical fiction I’m tempted to say “usually I don’t like HF but…” but at this point I think that’s a lie, and I actually love it. This is SO good! It certainly helps that we are following two storylines: one of Nella and her secret business that exclusively caters to women and dispensing with their shit husbands in the late 1700s (absolute queen), and one of Caroline and her shit husband in the current day, uncovering the secrets of the ~*lost apothecary*~. And then there’s Eliza, the absolutely precious 12 year old who inserts herself into Nella’s life and unknowingly puts many tragic pieces into motion. The two storylines unfold beautifully, poetically, tragically; individually and together.

"I swear and promise before god, author and creator of all things...Never to teach ungrateful persons or fools the secrets and mysteries of the trade...Never to divulge the secrets confided to me...Never to administer poisons...To disavow and shun as a pestilence the scandalous and pernicious practices of quacks, empirics and alchemists...And to keep no stale or bad drug in my shop. May god continue to bless me so long as I continue to obey these things!" -- Ancient Apothecary's Oath

"I mean that you can be anything you want in London."

"You are not searching for a thing so much as you are searching for an inconsistency of things, or an absence."

What a great surprise The Lost Apothecary ended up being. Not only was the cover beautiful, but the story inside was wonderful as well. Three points of view, two set in the same time period and the third much later. However the symbolism and storyline regularly knit through each other. Plus there was a map at the beginning and books with maps are always extra special. :-) Had me wanting to open an apothecary!
