This was the first book I read of A Song of Ice and Fire without having seen the TV series before. It was incredibly exciting, and Martin is truly a great storyteller. Often I would be completely surprised by the turns of events and twists of the journey, and with every page I feared what would happen to my favourite characters. Martin doesn't sugarcoat anything and isn't afraid of killing off beloved characters, making the story that more thrilling and the book that much harder to put down.
