As the first Sherlock Holmes or Arthur Conan Doyle book I’ve read, this was a great book to start with. Though I’m familiar with the character of Holmes, I wasn’t sure of what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book.
In this gripping book, the old Baskerville family of the Devonshire moors are seemingly haunted by the curse of the Baskerville Hound, a spectre upon the moors who kills the men of the house. After the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville, Henry Baskerville inherits the ancestral family estate. Watson & Holmes are enlisted by a nearby doctor to investigate the circumstances of his death and to prevent Henry from suffering a similar fate by uncovering the truth of the Baskerville hound.
The trail of clues and interviews undertaken by Watson & Holmes was incredibly intriguing and it seems that Doyle truly mastered the art of hooking in the reader. The often convoluted path to solving the mystery, with numerous unforeseen twists in the plot and the investigation, only served to drag me deeper into the storyline and the lives of these characters.
For a book written in this period, when (let’s face it) the writing isn’t the easiest to unravel, the Hound of the Baskervilles was a remarkably simple read that didn’t serve to confuse the reader with complex writing but rather amazed the reader with its impressive plot.
5 stars.

This is perhaps the best known of Doyle's Sherlock novels. In it, Sherlock and Watson investigate a family's curse and the appearance of a large, otherworldly hound that is suspected of murder.
This was my second attempt at this one, and I couldn't get into it either time. The writing is so dry. It's essentially "Here's this mystery I thought of, and here are all the clues and relevant characters, and here's the answer to the riddle." There is little character development, even of Sherlock and Watson. The only thing I gleaned about the two of them is that Sherlock treats Watson like a silly child and Watson is too dumb to notice.
Maybe I'm spoiled by the modernize, well-acted Sherlock movies, in which Sherlock is bumbling but still a genius and Watson has a mind of his own. I just wasn't grabbed by the story, and likely won't try others.

I enjoy reading Sherlock Holmes but its starting to wear. No small detail every passes by Sherlock. But the stories are fun.
After several collections of short stories, Doyle goes back to a full story, bringing Holmes back to life.
I do find it interesting that Holmes is so quick to dismiss the supernatural when Doyle was a huge believer in the supernatural himself. A member of the ghost club and frequenter of clairvoyants. Doyle's belief that Houdini had magical powers contributed to the end their friendship when Houdini insisted it was all a trick.
But Holmes is, as always, practical.
Fun read. I will probably take a break from Holmes for a while though.
