Another wonderful mystery of the great Sherlock Holmes. This story has great intrigue, especially as it hints a more supernatural undertone. Particularly, this book was heavily dominated by Watson's input and own investigations, which I found rather interesting. It was disappointing that we could not see Sherlock's amazing deductive reasoning skills throughout most of the book, but I enjoyed Watson's own courageousness and integrity.

I re-read this for the Unresolved Textual Tension book club (their complete review of The Hound of the Baskervilles) and
despite enjoying reading The Hound of the Baskervilles, I find myself struggling to say anything meaningful about it. It’s a straightforward detective mystery that is complex enough to be satisfying but that also gives you enough clues to figure it out by yourself. I think the neatness of the story is one of its distinctive features. Basically, no detail is superfluous and you can bet that if something is mentioned, it’ll later become relevant.
Also, if you squint you can see where the TV adaptations got their idea for the arrogant all-knowing Holmes BUT the book character is more realistic and definitely a lot nicer to Watson. You can tell that he cares both about him and his clients and it's not a simple intellectual pursuit.
Anyway, for once I’ll keep this short… I think this story is worth reading and it's making me want to re-read the rest. Back twenty-something years ago, when I originally read the complete works of Sir A.C. Doyle, my impression of them was very different. I had found them weirdly unsatisfying but now I tend to think it wasn’t the stories themselves as much as an inadvertent comparison to the many Agatha Christie novels I had been reading prior to the Holmes stories.
