I really liked the first two thirds of this book more than the last part. After the year 2000, the majority of the comics became excruciatingly political and honestly just really depressing. The longer the relationships went on, the more dejected I felt about the possibility of a successful long term relationship which is just really not the vibe I was going for. However, I really did like the first parts of the book a lot. 4.5 stars for the comics from the 80s, 4 stars for the comics from the 90s, and 2.25 stars for the comics from 2000 and onwards for an average of 3.5 overall.

What a great piece of history to dive into. I felt indebted to these women (or rather, the people in the author's life they represent). It was fascinating getting insights into what feminism was like in the 80s through 00s. Also really interesting to see the events of the 21st century from a different perspective than I had as a kid growing up leftist in a conservative place. It was also depressing at times to see how little has changed.

The main issue with the collection for me was how insufferable a few of the characters were. Mo really annoyed me until Sydney came along and made her seem reasonable and well rounded.

This was a challenging read. The characters were sometimes insufferable, but I grew to really like them. I wasn't a fan of the ending. It was pretty abrupt because the author went on hiatus. I didn't like that
Sydney and Mo stayed together and Clarice and Toni split up. Sydney was shitty to Mo, and I didn't see why they stayed together. I didn't like Sydney at all. Toni and Clarice clearly had lingering feelings, and I would have liked to see a resolution to that. They were still apart at the end of the book. I would have liked to see them either resolve their feelings or get back together.
But it was very true to life. Sometimes your friends make decisions that you disagree with, and sometimes you don't get a tidy resolution to your conflicts.

I absolutely loved
the relationship between Sparrow and her partner (I can't remember his name). It was a great example of how bisexual women with male partners can be part of the lesbian community. I loved seeing them parent together. I also loved the storyline with the trans girl, Janis.

Sometimes it was hard to read because of all the political content, but that content was so important. It was just hard to see how we are still struggling with a lot of the same issues. It was hard to see how little progress we've made in some areas. I think reading all of the strips together in a relatively short period made that tougher to handle. I think reading them as they came out would have made that less difficult.

This is such an influential collection and such an important snapshot in time in a queer community. It's worth reading.

I've long heard chatter about Bechdel's Dykes to Watch Out For - how you can you be in queer spaces & not eventually hear of her groundbreaking comics? - but I didn't have much of an idea about what the strip was about, aside from dykes. Well, it's about their lives, loves, jobs, educations, families, and politics, and every messy bit that pops up in those areas. The strip has an extremely diverse cast of characters, parrying the conservative complaint that characters who are marginalized on multiple axes is modern woke bullshit. It's also refreshingly inclusive - though some of the characters struggle with the concept of transgender, the comic itself is affirming and depicts trans people as real human beings. This should not be a big deal, but it feels revolutionary to me. And, on a related note, Lois is my favorite of the dykes. (Seriously, the comic that discusses bisexual lesbians AND trans men in the same strip changed my life. Those are not modern made-up things or tumblr identities! Here they are, being discussed in our community long before the popularization of the Internet. So validating.)

The characters were really well thought-out, and it was nice to see them and their relationships evolve over the years. There was also a lot of historical information included, and at times, it was a bit much. I felt like some plot points were omitted, but perhaps it would make more sense if I read it sporadically over a longer period of time.

Yet curiously, against the sweeping backdrop of history... everyday life pretty much continues.

There's a bid, at the moment, for stories about happy queer adults. I prefer this: the struggle to find happiness against the endless and brutal onslaughts of a system that is not designed for us and compels us — again and again — to hurt ourselves and each other. Then there are these snatches of joy and the glimpses of a better life and a story that never really ends.
