There is a lot going on here: questions about what it means to be human; thinking about assimilation and integration as betrayal; some weird thoughts about what it might be like to be a pet, and more. Deep. Butler was so damn smart.

Completely fascinating, but I was left wanting more exploration into the themes of what it means to be human, what it means to make a real choice, that felt somewhat glossed-over in this book. (I did find more of what I was looking for in the second book in this series -- so maybe I just needed to be patient.)

Endless elaboration on the biological bodies of the aliens and the spacecraft, yet I still feel like Otavia Butler lacks a developed atmosphere in her writing, causing what little character development there is to fall flat. Characters just make their decisions with little emotions or clear reasons involved. Like why are all characters just automatically upset by dna manipulation?? Why is it assumed that in the beginning of a civilization the males try to r*pe immediately?? Nothing is elaborated it’s just assumed that the reader understands why - I don’t get it. Love a Black sci-fi pioneer but Octavia’s priorities in her storytelling style just isn’t for me tbh
