I enjoyed the story, the world and its mythology, and a few of the characters. But it felt in need of an editor, and there were dozens of characters and their backstories that could have been cut without any loss. It felt as if George R.R. Martin had spent a decade plotting the whole of the Song of Ice and Fire series and then, afraid of the complexity of it all, had just slammed the whole thing into three hundred pages and self-published it. The author could turn this into a great series if she wanted to put the time into it and had a good editor to help. As it is, it’s still enjoyable to read and often witty and insightful.
