Yikes. I remember really having enjoyed Ella Enchanted, but this was a hot mess. We started off okay with the main character and her family, but it got BAD real quick with a king (41) marrying a foreign commoner (19). The xenophobia from the people in this kingdom was wild, but not as wild as the plot of the new queen being controlled/ influenced by the magic mirror. Also the whole thing about centaurs being mostly animals? Wild, considering the brain is in the human part. Hope you’re down for child marriage because the prince is 17 and the mc is 16 when they get married, completely by surprise, with no time for the mc to consider if she would be a good queen. The poetry/ songs were mostly bad, but I did love the gnome judge.

Very good little book. Not outstanding, but interesting, delightful, and sweet. The main character has good emotional depth and I could feel her plight. Her troubles made me really sad and I rooted for her. The love interest isn’t really anything to write home about, but it’s not poorly done, just average for these types of books. I found Ivi to be a compelling, complex character. She’s one of my favorite parts of the book.
Anyway, a really pleasant little book. No wonder it’s one of the ones that stuck with me. Not five stars, but there’s something about it that makes it special to me. :)
