I have no idea what I was expecting reading this. It was much, much more emotionally driven than I expected? And really claustrophobic (not in a bad way). Like these characters are having a rough old time of it. And the smut scenes go from very out there to very emotional. It was a whole thing. Like we start at very hot very dub dub con / noncon and then move into what was mostly lots and lots of sexual tension before everything explodes. I was definitely not expecting so much of the story to not be them going at it like rabbits.
The only other book by Eris Adderly I've tried was a dnf and now I'm thinking I need to go back and try again as this was a surprisingly compelling read.

The start was hard to get through, it felt so cold and inpersonal....which to be fair was representational of the dynamic between the FMC and MMC. Eventually the characters give in to their attraction and the book heats up.

If you’re gonna have problems with the ethics of a boss and employee sleeping together for higher pay, you’re not going to want to pick this one up. However, that said, I enjoyed this one way more than I expected to and had a great time the whole way through. Also, the characters felt and acted like real, fleshed-out people, which I appreciate. Definitely gonna give this one a reread once a year.

Went into this book fully expecting a quick & dirty, low-quality-written piece of smut. Was pleasantly surprised by the characters and - just like the heroine - seem to have caught feelings among all the dirty deeds.
