A charming story I'd surprisingly never read before! Scrooge to me has always been the musical with Albert Finney (which is still the most faithful and fantastic adaptation I've ever seen). I obviously love Dickens, and this was a beautiful little tale of a man looking at the people around him with new eyes and making a great change. Loved it.

It remains unmatched as a festive read

Summary: A uplifting morality tale that brought a tear to my eye a couple of times and made me think about people.

Things I liked:

I think the thing I liked best was the device. The unravelling of a nasty old person into the events and experiences that ended up defining the person he was today. Combined with a glimpse of the future I think it was a great way to get any reader thinking about themselves and people that they knew in a new light.

The Cratchets, what a family they made me laugh, they made me cry. Little Tiny Tim is such a trooper.

Things I thougth could be improved: He seems to do a lot of exposition breaking the 'show don't tell principle' which actually drags me out of the story. I think I would have prefered to discover the characters organically, but with such a short book that might have been difficult.

Highlight:
Spoiler It's got to be scrooge on Christmas morning. It gave me tingles all over when he went around being a nice guy all of a sudden

I've read A Christmas Carol countless times, listened to endless audio versions, and watched just about every movie/tv adaptation there is. Reading it is still the best experience, but somehow reading this version, seeing Dickens's handwriting side by side with the printed words, seeing what he scribbled out, what was a correction, and how he wrote every bit of this manuscript adds a layer of joy, excitement, and Christmas Spirit to the experience. Wonderful version.

This was my 219th book finished in 2025.

I've read o my one thing by Charles Dickens - Great Expectations, and I didn't really have a good time. I swore off him, but I did always say I would give A Christmas Carol a go. I'm glad I did, because I actually liked it a lot.

It was a curious choice to read it in August, but it was still just as wholesome.

It made me feel very emotional at times. Poor boy. I ended up sobbing in one part. What a powerful story that really hit quite close to home in some aspects.
