My introduction to A Christmas Carol was through, of all things, a videotape of The Flintstones' Christmas Carol, where Dickens' story was told as a theatre production starring Fred Flintstone as Ebeneezer Scrooge. There was a subplot where he wasn't learning his lines or something, and I think the ghosts were real instead of being actors... the story was obviously such a cliché the writers of the Flintstones felt the need to shake up their adaptation.

It is remarkable that the story endures within me at all, considering I can't have been more than 5 years old when I watched it, and I didn't even likethe Flintstones. It's not part of the culture of Christmas for no reason. I'm not even a big lover of 'Christmas spirit' beyond enjoying getting things for free (I got a coffee machine this year!), but Dickens' story temporarily makes me believe in the enduring power of everything yule (which I only just googled as I've only really heard it as an American word for Christmas, apparently it's like a pagan thing?).

It is heartwarming and sickly sweet in a way that isn't bad for your health. Even if you don't like Christmas, you may hate it a little less if you read this story.

jim dale you legend

This was interesting, I was under the impression that Scrooge holds out until the last ghost but by ghost 1 he was already like "wow i should totally be nicer, i will now change my ways" lol Not a very steadfast capitalist

I think I'm officially done with Victorian writers' fixation on describing food and mundane everyday situations in painful details.

"For he was wise enough to know that nothing ever happened on this globe, for good, at which some people did not have their fill of laughter in the outset... his own heart laughed: and that was quite enough for him."

Actually, I think it may have been even better than I remembered. I certainly didn’t recall all the humor in it.
