Genuinely one of my favourite LMM books to the point I could not judge it on its actual quality due to the nostalgic force behind it. That being said, Valancy is one of my favourite heroines and the quality of the dialogue here, especially in the scenes with her family, is top-notch. Perfect LMM.

DID NOT FINISH: 33%

70 pages in and it just was not holding my interest. I was reading it for the sake of reading it. I’ll keep Green Gables as my LMM content.

Years ago, when I was a teenager, my sister received this book as a gift. Even though I was L.M. Montgomery's biggest fan, I wouldn't read this book. Because the cover.

My sister eventually convinced me to read it, and I discovered what might be L.M. Montgomery's most delightful book. Those years I spent not reading this book were wasted! I could have read it five or ten more times during my years of stubbornness! But I have a lifetime to make up for that now. I have to pull it out every year or two just to enjoy Valancy's comments to her impossible relatives.

Read this for book club and honestly went in with pretty low expectations. But I loved it. Valancy might be one of my new favorite heroines. So fun, heartwarming, funny and surprisingly relevant a hundred years later. Reminded me of something Glennon Doyle said in her most recent book Untamed: "I guess women have to almost die before we give ourselves permission to live how we want."

From the end of the book: "It's really disgusting that Doss' crazy adventures should have turned out like this. It makes one feel that there is no use in behaving properly."

I'll always and forever love books about women living their own lives on their own terms.
