That was educating and thought-provoking. It made me think a lot about the intersection of race, gender and class in Britain. I recommend this book to anyone willing to understand the experience of other people. Be ready to feel overwhelmed, emotional, to feel indignation and pride.
The style was quite difficult to get used to, so it took me a significant period of time to finish the book. Also, it was easier to listen to it than to read, which is unusual for me but may help someone.

4.5 Great audiobook with reader Anna-Maria Nabirye making district voices for the characters. I liked how each story connected and expanded the context for the women/people's narratives and the historically Black and British points of view.
This is a fantastic book. I loved hearing the voices of so many different minority women. I enjoyed that the chapters throughout were intertwined with characters related to/knowing each other, and I was also glad to see them all tie together at the end. This made the book more of a novel and less a compilation of short stories.

A collection of profiles of black woman in England with modern and historic stories to share. Shows how people are all connected. Interesting to read, even though I don’t agree with everything the characters say or do. P
There’s no punctuation but I didn’t mind.

Finally a Booker Prize winner I enjoyed! It tells the stories of 12 different women, all related to at least one other as relations, friends, mentors, etc. Through these characters vignettes you get to see deeper into that character’s backstory, experiences and emotions which often challenge societal ideas of race, gender, age, feminism and so on. Evaristo often introduces characters cleverly through the prejudiced view of another character, to then flip those preconceptions through that character’s own chapter, revealing their hidden depths and internal struggles.
It’s hard not to compare it to The Overstory which I listened to at the same time. Both have lots of characters with storylines that only sometimes intersect. However Girl, Woman, Other was so much more engaging and Evaristo really made each character’s voice feel unique and individualised.
