I wanted to give it 2.5 stars, but went with the 3 instead of the 2 because some of the stories were insightful and impactful. However this book could have been 100 pages and maybe 3-4 characters less. The last 1/4 of the book seems rushed, especially seeing as how 2 of those last characters are the ties that bind characters together.
Phenomenal.
The writing style is so intruiging. I loved the changes of perspective and people. And even though all were different and each chapter was about three different women, it all was connected. The changes between those women aswell were so smooth. From daughter to mother to friend. Or grandaughter to mother to old relative.
You are emerged into the life of 12 women of color who live in Britain, mainly London, with different background, sexuality, life style and education. The topics are all very sensetive but beautifully written. You feel the struggles the women have gone though. From being a black / coloured girl in a white britain and getting locked at differently. Form having to marry a black, nigerian man because no white man comes into the house. To having to be girly to be a girl and not being able to express yourself.
There are topics of divorce, child pregnancy, rape. All very good explained and brought up, making light of what happens, how you feel in a very respective way.
I was totally emerged in this book, and would highly recommend everyone to read it. Even when its not your usual genre, (it isn't for me). In an age where sexuality, gender and race and so on are so prominantly talked about this is a great book to shead light on all these!

This patchwork quilt of a novel might be my favourite read of last year (I was a little late to the party). I have keen interest in stories of inequality and social injustice so am drawn to literature about feminism and race. However, I didn’t expect, as a white male, to identify with so many characters: I suppose, like the protagonists, I have been a struggling penniless theatre company founder ending up at the National complete with secret imposter syndrome paranoia, but more universally: have been faced with dilemmas of whether to remain politically pure or to ‘sell out’, worried about who’s guidance to follow, and I’ve certainly lived in close proximity to all of the novel’s main themes… all Londoners have. This novel presents us with so many interesting stories, that you hope will interconnect: it’s a bit like going speed dating and realising you’re actually at a school reunion.
I loved this book so much. The writing and character building are incredible. I felt like I got to know so many lives across time and experiences.
It’s a whirlwind of stories, as the narrator changes every couple of chapters. If I had a compliant it would be that I was often sad that a story was over. I could read a novel about any of these women. And the authors style is so specific and filled with details about each person.
I listened to the audio book and the reader was really good and engaging.
