I got engulfed by this wondrous book. It's been sitting on my bookshelves for 3 years. The first time I picked it up, for some reason I could not find its rhythm. If the same happened to you, pick it up again and you won't regret it!
TLDR: 5*/5. For anyone that wants to read a fresh perspective of the living experience, this is a beautiful way to do it.
Evaristo weaves an intricate patchwork of 12 women's lives - the thread gets passed on from mother to daughter, to colleague, to great grandmother. She masterfully unfolds the 12 stories, swiftly changing continents, centuries and contexts, without "rushing" the narration of each unique character. The literary technique of fluidity helps us flow through the stories effortlessly. Although the twelve women face different obstacles, stereotypes and people, there is an invisible passing of the torch which holds the vital fire that helped them not only survive, but thrive, during their life-time.
The author honors the sacrifices that have been made by women throughout history, for the younger generations to live the way that they do. She strikes a balance between the rough, painful parts of each story by introducing a moment of 'justice' at a later point - helping the reader feel relief, and making it an overall optimistic outlook on life!
By far, my favorite read this year.

AMAZING. A new favourite book, for sure. All the feelings and all the skill, wow.
Loved the stories woven together- a little hard to follow listening on audio, though. So many interconnected lives and all the unique stories that bring them together.

Edit: on second thoughts, the transphobia near the end was a little unnecessary and just kind of came out of nowhere :/ still really enjoyed the book but that did bug me

Loved this book. It was unlike anything I’ve ever read before. In someways that made it less “comfortable.” But I really really enjoyed the different narratives and how they eventually tied together. Very well written.
