Bit of a slog tbh, but the ending had me on the edge of my seat! The whole plot however was quite far flung.

a nice and gripping read. the rich family is written very mysterious and intriguing, reminiscent of the families in Succession and Get Out. the writing style is casual in a way that has you streaming through the pages.

the plot doesn’t take off till past 40% bc the MC has every excuse to not listen to the tape yet! I’d say this is not a mystery with mindblowing “oh, shit!” twists—MC conveniently ignores a lot of suspicious wordings that a reader does not, and the foreshadowing is a bit heavy-handed—but while you may guess the big surprises correctly, the details are more elusive, plus there are some well placed red herrings (my favorite being the “oh no he’s hot” sort-of-subplot lol).

This was such a good book. I audiobooked it and I was hooked from the opening. It was giving a touch of Inheritance Games and Knives Out. I loved the creepy games in the story. I liked how she had to puzzle her way out of the terror. I would have loved to learn more about the list of missing girls and find out more about them but Steadman did it right. There was just enough mystery that I could fill in the gaps. I liked how Harriet was self assured from the start. I feel like a lot of books I read have main characters who compare themselves to the other women in stories and look down on themselves. Harriet knew who she was on page 2 and kept her head high. I liked the juxtaposition of her as an orphan yet making a name in her own right and the old world money that Edwards family had. Robert was a good character as well. I kept waiting on the women to turn on her and the twist at the end was well done. If I didn’t have things to do yesterday I would have finished the book in one sitting.

An engaging mystery surrounding a powerful old-wealth family and the next woman planning to marry in. The audiobook reading was excellent and kept me hooked.
