“You are my American Duchess.”….”You poor milk into tea at the wrong time, but you do everything else the right way. I love the way you speak. And I love what you say. I’ve never met another woman who is as fascinating.

I’m a mess over this book guys. While reading I found myself crying involuntarily. Avoiding the book because I wanted to make it last as long as possible, gobbling it up like one eats a piece of cheesecake and swoony my heart away.
Suffice it to say that I’m now a big fan of Eloisa James!
I can’t say much about the story because a huge plot twist happens in the middle of the book that had me shook so just read the synopsis for the book!
But I have to talk about my feels!
I loved Merry <3 she was opinionated, unapologetically herself, warm and determined. She is easily one of my all time favorite Historical Romance heroines. In England she is a fish out of water…separated by a common tongue, culture, and social structure but she handles it all with absolute grace.
She’s already had more than one fiancé in American and her and her family has decided that enough is enough so she is determined to finally find an actual fiancé and marry him in England. She’s an heiress from Boston who is voluptuous, unapologetically American and loves every kind of plant and flower. She also rocks her NATURAL CURLS
“Right then and there, she made up her mind that there would be no more curling irons. Her natural curls would have to do.”
She’s just so interesting! Not only does she love gardening like seriously love it but she also has an obsession, one can say, of facts..she will always sprinkle in some history or trivial fact into any conversation she might be having, no matter the station of the person she’s speaking to. So you can gather that she’s not that palatable for the English.
Oh but some people find her very very palatable.
I can’t say much about the romance because …spoilers! Ughghg but I will say that this is a fabulous tale of opposites attract. With sexual tension that grips you in just the right way. With such depth in the writing and skill in every sex scene…you’ll find yourself very much like me swooning and crying involuntarily.
Pick this up I highly recommend it for Historical Romance lovers! THIS is a guaranteed good time with all the warm and fuzzies.

Ohhhhh what a super star Merry is! The wedding! I shrieked! Y’all… Merry was precious. She was authentically and unapologetically American. It embarrassed the guy she was engaged to. His brother LOVED that about her. She’s smart, witty, full of random facts. Trent has some things from his childhood that were holding him back from love. I loved how Trent loved her for who she was. This book is everything I love in a historical romance.
I'm going to have to call it quits . . .
I've seen lots of complaints over the years that Eloisa James is either fabulous or cornball, but I don't think I'd ever encountered the cornball until now. I make allowances for historical romance, you have to make allowances for historical romance, but this was so far past that . . .
If you want to know specifics, I spoiler-tagged it in the comments, but that's all I can make myself say about it right now.
Ugh.

Ugh.
Three to five different plot lines/books in one, but an easy and enjoyable enough read, and did not suffer too terribly from being abandoned for a week and a half while I read a different book on vacation, so.
Mary is hilarious. I would hope she would be my friend if we ever crossed paths, in fact I probably would have eaten the pineapple the same way and we would have bonded immediately!
4.5

Aside from a couple of moments, I really enjoyed this one. I'm curious about the final page and what could happen and I rather liked the teaser for A Gentleman Never Tells.
Liked the second half better than the first half. The after marriage stuff made the book for me.
This was perfect escapist fiction in the midst of cerebral theories on book history and the like I've been having to read lately. I was however somewhat disappointed that I didn't love it as much as the series novels I've previously read by the author. I don't know why but the characters weren't as engaging to me as her other ones were. I enjoyed it enough to read it in one go but I don't think it will stick with me as much as her other novels and characters have.
rather unusual plot and characters I didn't really care for but overall entertaining enough (at least on accelerated audio).
