I've never read Stephen King but always wanted to. So, I polled my Stephen-King-Fan friends as to which book they would recommend if I could only read one. The answer was unanimous. Read “The Stand”, they said. You’ll love it, they said. Many suggested I get the uncut edition, which I now see was a big mistake.
It seems to me that this was two stories in one. There was the story about the plague (which I enjoyed) and the story about the Dark Man (which I didn't). Unless I missed something, I don’t see how one relates to the other.
I enjoyed the beginning the book but as it progressed I got bored. The story got repetitive and tedious. It was unnecessarily long and there were too many (forgettable) characters to keep track of.
I know Stephen King is a good writer (he wouldn't be so successful if he wasn't) so I give him 2 stars but I will not be reading his books again. I will however continue to watch movies based on his books.

Very long, but I finally finished this uncut version! I liked all the characters, including the so call villians except for Fran. Her character remained the least developed throughout the story with her hating Harold, obsessing over Stu and crying in every scene. Other than that, the book was a good read. One one-dimensional, annoying character wasn't enough to stop me from enjoying this wonderful tale. The ending was a but weak but I did enjoy the ride.

bis auf weiteres…wie kann ich dieses Buch bewerten?
mein Lieblingscharakter ist gestorben und dass ich viel zu schnell darüber hinweggekommen bin, ist gut!?

I don't know if I could bring myself to ever read it again, but it was an epic journey.
The strength was in its character-driven plot as well as the writing itself. Sure, there were times when I wished that I could tear a handful of pages out and toss them away, but generally I was keen to press on.

The scariest thing about this book isn't the virus or Flagg but King's understanding of the human condition how easy it is for any of us to blindly follow someone. If I had ready this in high school I'm sure the first two would have been the most haunting parts of this amazing story.
